Acetyl-L-carnitine is the acetylated form of L-carnitine, a semi-essential amino acid. Our bodies can produce L-carnitine themselves, but to meet our daily requirements we rely on intake via our diet (primarily red meat) .
The major advantage of acetyl-L-carnitine is that, unlike L-carnitine, it can cross the blood-brain barrier. This means that all the beneficial properties of L-carnitine also benefit the nerve cells in our brain.
An additional supply of acetyl-L-carnitine is recommended for vegetarians and vegans, as well as older people who have a poor and unbalanced diet. However, younger people also value acetyl-L-carnitine to help meet increased requirements .
