Acetyl-L-carnitine is the acetylated form of L-carnitine, a semi‑essential amino acid. Our body can produce L-carnitine itself, but to meet daily requirements it relies on intake from our diet (primarily red meat).
The major advantage of acetyl-L-carnitine is that, unlike L-carnitine, it can cross the blood–brain barrier. This means all the positive properties of L-carnitine also benefit the nerve cells in our brain.
Additional supplementation with acetyl-L-carnitine is recommended for vegetarians and vegans as well as older people who have a poor or unvaried diet. Younger people also value acetyl-L-carnitine to cover increased requirements.
