Alpha-lipoic acid is an extraordinary substance. This vitamin-like, sulphur-containing fatty acid is active throughout the entire body. It is both fat- and water-soluble and can even cross the blood-brain barrier. Normally, we can meet our requirements for alpha-lipoic acid through our diet (particularly meat and offal). However, this can lead to a deficiency in those following a meat-free diet. Alpha-lipoic acid occurs as R(+)-alpha-lipoic acid and S-alpha-lipoic acid. However, only R(+)-alpha-lipoic acid corresponds to the body’s own natural form and is physiologically active. Normally, the ratio between the two – due to production processes – is 50:50. In cheap dietary supplements, the proportion of R(+)-alpha-lipoic acid is significantly lower due to unnecessary fillers such as magnesium stearate and silicon dioxide. This means that a 600 mg capsule may contain as little as 100 to 150 mg of bioactive lipoic acid. WOSCHA alpha-lipoic acid contains 250 mg of bioactive R(+)-alpha-lipoic acid, contains no additives and is vegan.
