What exactly is creatine?

Our body can synthesise creatine from the amino acids arginine, glycine and methionine. This only fulfils less than half of the daily requirement of around 5 grams of creatine. We are therefore reliant on supplementary dietary intake.
Animal foods contain mainly creatine, for example in meat, processed meats, fish and seafood. Therefore the risk of creatine deficiency is particularly pronounced for vegans and vegetarians, as well as for people who only occasionally consume animal products. Age also plays an important role. As intake of the amino acids necessary for creatine formation is no longer sufficient, older people often have a creatine deficiency. In addition, the energy conversion in the mitochondria no longer works as well as in younger years.

What effects does creatine have on the body?

Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is a molecule that contains three phosphate groups. Our cells need the energy that is released when a phosphate group is cleaved. In particular, nerve cells and our muscles (including the heart muscle) require a lot of energy — and therefore a lot of ATP.
During intense physical strain (such as preparing for exams, stress or heavy work in the job/sport) such a large amount of energy is required that our body cannot keep up. In these situations creatine regenerates ATP, which has been broken down to adenosine diphosphate (ADP), in a very short time.
To achieve this, a phosphate group is bound to creatine in our cells. The creatine phosphate formed (also called phosphocreatine) functions as an energy reserve, as it can donate its phosphate group again within fractions of a second. This keeps the energy supply uninterrupted even during increased demand.

Where is creatine found?

Creatine, in the form of creatine phosphate, is stored mainly in the brain as well as in skeletal muscles and the heart. For this reason it is particularly popular with athletes.

Who is creatine suitable for?

It is recommended to offer supplementary creatine to people who have a high creatine turnover (competitive and recreational athletes, people with physically demanding work), who do not obtain sufficient creatine from their diet (vegetarians, vegans and older people) and who utilise or produce creatine poorly (also older people and individuals with a genetic defect). Studies have shown a positive effect of creatine on overall well‑being in all these groups.
