Frankincense with ginger and vitamin E

Frankincense (Boswellia serrata) grows mainly in the dry mountainous regions of north-eastern India and contains the beneficial and health-promoting boswellic acids. These can, for example, help to support the body’s own metabolic processes in the gut and joints .

References to the use of frankincense (Boswellia serrata) can be found as far back as in Egyptian texts dating back three and a half thousand years. The Egyptians used frankincense to freshen the air, in ointments and for treating wounds. Three thousand years ago, there were already established trade routes – the so-called ‘incense routes’ – which brought the precious resin from Somalia and Ethiopia on the one hand, and from India and the countries bordering the Red Sea on the other, to Egypt and Mesopotamia.

Hippocrates and Hildegard von Bingen were also aware of the benefits of frankincense. Saint Hildegard von Bingen (1098–1179) developed important guidelines on healthy living and nutrition. In her work *Physika*, she devotes an important chapter to frankincense. The self-assured Benedictine abbess studied the effects of plants in great depth. Her teachings were forgotten for many centuries; it was only in the last few decades that her work, known as ‘Hildegard medicine’, experienced a true renaissance.
