Functions of L-glutamine
L-glutamine is not considered an essential amino acid because our body can produce it from L-glutamic acid itself with the help of the enzyme glutamine synthetase. L-glutamic acid is also an amino acid closely related to L-glutamine.
Part of the L-glutamine is converted into glutamic acid in the brain. Glutamic acid can break down ammonia. In addition, L-glutamine is a precursor of glutathione, the most important antioxidant in our body.
If the body is supplied with too few carbohydrates, the liver can form glucose from the amino acids L-glutamine and L-alanine. If no free L-glutamine is available, the liver draws on the reserves in the muscles.
