L-proline – the amino acid that promotes cohesion
L-proline is one of the non-essential amino acids. This
means that the body can produce some of it itself. It uses
L-glutamate as the building block for this. The remainder
is obtained through diet, for example by eating
meat, milk or even honey. As L-proline is primarily found in
animal-based foods, it is particularly important to ensure an adequate
intake if following
a vegan or low-protein diet.
But what is this amino acid actually good for? L-proline plays a particularly
important role in relation to collagen.
A full 12% of collagen consists of L-proline, one of our most important
structural proteins. Collagen is found, for example, in connective tissue, the skin, tendons and ligaments.
