Many vitamins are usually absorbed in the form of their precursors, which the body then has to laboriously convert into the actually active form. There are some metabolic disorders or genetic variations that can mean a person has problems converting certain compounds.
One example would be folic acid:
Nowadays, it is common for pregnant women to be prescribed folic acid by their doctor. This is intended as a preventative measure against spina bifida in the child. What most women – and unfortunately also a great many doctors – do not realise is that around 50 per cent of people are unable to convert simple folate into its active form. Consequently, these individuals – and their children – have no protection whatsoever!
Alternative: Really good folic acid supplements nowadays contain 5-MTHF instead of basic folic acid. Admittedly, the raw material is slightly more expensive, but in return it offers 100 per cent protection rather than just 50 per cent!

The situation is similar with minerals. For example, many minerals must first be converted into citrates. This takes place in the stomach with the help of stomach acid. People without stomach acid (e.g. those taking acid blockers for a stomach ulcer) are then unable to convert these substances and, consequently, cannot absorb them either!

Vital, but not always advisable!

There are also metabolic disorders in which certain substances must under no circumstances be taken.
For example, in cases of haemochromatosis, taking iron is strictly prohibited. In certain thyroid disorders, taking iodine only further disrupts the system. And in the case of the common metabolic disorder HPU, one must not take copper.
