Microalgae of controlled quality
Spirulina and chlorella are single-celled microalgae. Chlorella belongs to the green algae group, whilst spirulina belongs to the blue-green algae group. As microalgae, spirulina and chlorella are very small. They have a diameter of just 5 to 10 micrometres. By way of comparison: a pinhead has a diameter of 1,000 to 3,000 micrometres.
Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis) is a microalga (cyanobacterium) that inhabits shallow, subtropical to tropical waters and has been used as food by people living near these waters since ancient times. Unlike other microalgae, it has no cell walls, produces oxygen and contains large amounts of chlorophyll a. Other pigments, which overlay the green of the chlorophyll, give the microalgae its characteristic greenish-blue hue.
Chlorella (Pyrenoidesa) belongs to the
freshwater green algae genus of the Chlorellaceae family, which is found
worldwide. The species name pyrenoidosa refers to the presence
of a pyrenoid within the Chlorella chloroplasts. The high
chlorophyll content gives the Chlorella alga a rich,
deep green colour.
Both algae are naturally rich in folic acid (approx. 40 µg per
12 tablets) and vitamin B12 (approx. 0.48 µg per 12 tablets).
Note: Spirulina is not suitable for
people with phenylketonuria, as it contains phenylalanine, which
could exacerbate phenylketonuria.
