Cortisol is, alongside the catecholamines, the most important stress hormone

In view of the multitude of neuroendocrine interactions of cortisol, an excess of cortisol leads, among other things, to metabolic disorders with overweight, visceral fat distribution and elevated blood lipid levels, to diabetes, immune defects, and to a reduced defence against infections and tumours. The reason for this is the inhibition of the cellular immune response with a relative strengthening of the humoral immune response. It is responsible for increased secretion in acute and recurring stress situations. Highest concentration in the body between 7 and 8 am.

Normal secretion:

Possible consequences of low cortisol levels:
