Methylcobalamin and Adenosylcobalamin – the best vitamin B12s!
Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) has a relatively recent history. It was only discovered in 1948. It is a very complex, large molecule and is required for the development of all the body's cells. Nerve cells in particular suffer from a deficiency. The best-selling B12 is the cheap cyanocobalamin. It is effective, but not optimal, because it must first be converted for absorption, during which the not entirely harmless cyanide compound is released (better known as hydrogen cyanide).
Methylcobalamin is the form the body needs and is absorbed significantly better without conversion. The biological activity of methylcobalamin is increased by probiotic bacteria and beetroot.
There is another form of vitamin B12 that is even slightly better than the already very good methylcobalamin: adenosylcobalamin!
Because of its very high price it is used rather rarely in dietary supplements.
In the new improved formula of Natur Vital B12-SL from 2020, 50% adenosylcobalamin is now used! Both are biologically active forms.
Who needs to pay attention to vitamin B12
Vegans and, to some extent, vegetarians who avoid consuming milk and eggs must pay close attention to their vitamin B12 intake.
Vitamin B12 is absorbed in the large intestine. A significant portion is, however, also produced by the bacteria of the large intestine.
People with chronic intestinal problems (ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease) therefore need to pay particular attention to their vitamin B12 supply, as do people without a large intestine (e.g. after bowel cancer surgery).
This is because these people produce too little of their own B12.
