Jeden Tag 50+ – specially formulated for men and women over 50
As we age, the body’s nutritional requirements change. Consequently, the need for iron and copper decreases. That is why Every Day 50+ contains neither iron nor copper. It is important for men and women of this age to take additional vitamin B12 and sufficient folic acid (folate) to support, amongst other things, cognitive function and memory. For this age group, too, higher amounts of vitamins K2 and D3 are important.
B vitamins in the ideal form and dosage
Jeden Tag 50+ provides 50 μg of vitamin B12 in the biologically active forms methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin. These are significantly superior in quality to the usual, cheap cyanocobalamin.
It also contains 300 μg of active folic acid in its best form, 5-methyltetrahydrofolate. Around 50 per cent of people are unable to utilise the simple folic acid, as their metabolism is unable to convert it into active folic acid, which the body requires. 5MTHF is already converted and can therefore be utilised without difficulty even by these people.
High-dose vitamin D3 and K2
Calcium is positioned in the correct place within the bone through the action of vitamin K. This is of particular importance for this age group. Every Day 50+ provides 45 μg of K1 (phytomenadione) and at least 90 μg of vitamin K2. Vitamin D is also important for bones, although its range of effects is much broader: amongst other things, it also has positive effects on immunity, muscle function and normal cell division. Each tablet therefore contains a high dose of 35 μg of vitamin D3, as vitamin D is of great importance and has numerous beneficial properties.
Supporting eye health and special additives
In addition, Jeden Tag 50+ contains vitamins A and B2 as well as zinc, all of which help to maintain eyesight. The levels of lutein, zeaxanthin and meso-zeaxanthin are also higher than in other products. Finally, the special ingredients coenzyme Q10, alpha-lipoic acid and pterostilbene have been added.
B vitamins in the best possible form and at the ideal dosage
The ‘Every Day Multis’ contain a large quantity of B vitamins, but in acceptable dosages. The daily requirements, average intake levels and their lower limits have been carefully examined. Not only are the latest scientific findings and safe upper limits taken into account, but also the body’s ability to metabolise the various B vitamins. Furthermore, all formulations include the biologically active forms of vitamins B2 (riboflavin-5'-phosphate), B6 (pyridoxal-5'-phosphate), B12 (methyl- and adenosylcobalamin) and folic acid (5-methyltetrahydrofolate glucosamine salt). These are the forms utilised by the body, and research shows that they exhibit higher bioavailability within the body.
Pyridoxal-5'-phosphate as a form of vitamin B6
Tingling or numbness may occasionally occur in the hands or feet when very high amounts of vitamin B6 are taken. For this reason, in the Netherlands, a maximum safe daily dose of 21 mg applies to vitamin supplements for adults. The daily multivitamins are well below this (maximum 4.2 mg). Furthermore, only the biologically active form of vitamin B6, pyridoxal-5'-phosphate (P-5'-P), is used, rather than pyridoxine HCl, which still needs to be converted in the body. Research is currently being carried out to determine whether the occasional side effects mentioned above occur only with vitamin B6 in the form of pyridoxine HCl and not, or to a lesser extent, with pyridoxal-5'-phosphate. Evidence suggests that only pyridoxine HCl is toxic to nerve cells at high doses.
Folic acid as 5-methyltetrahydrofolate
Folic acid
(pteroylmonoglutamic acid), which is frequently used in
dietary supplements for stability reasons, is a synthetic form that does not
occur naturally. In food, it is present as folate.
Folic acid taken via dietary supplements must
be converted in the body into tetrahydrofolate and subsequently into
5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF). Studies
show that this complex conversion process is far from optimal
in a
considerable number of people. The addition of 5-MTHF eliminates this problem.
The ‘Every Day Multis’ range utilises the superior form
of 5-methyltetrahydrofolate, which is bound to glucosamine salt (under
the brand name Quatrefolic®). Thanks to this binding with
glucosamine salt (of plant origin), the biologically active
form is kept stable and optimal absorption
is ensured. Studies show that Quatrefolic® is characterised by
greater water solubility, stability and bioavailability
. Furthermore, 5-MTHF can cross the blood-brain barrier,
unlike the ‘normal’ (synthetic) form of
folic acid.
Vitamin B12 in the form of adenosyl- and methylcobalamin
The process of vitamin B12 absorption from food is complex. There is also evidence to suggest that the NRV (formerly RDA) of 2.5 µg per day is set too low and that requirements for healthy adults and older people may vary and exceed 20 µg per day. To ensure the safety of the vitamin B12 supplementation and to take account of the fact that the absorption of B12 from food and supplements is not always straightforward, the everyday multivitamins contain higher doses of the biologically active forms methyl- and adenosylcobalamin.
Cyanocobalamin, a cost-effective synthetic variant of vitamin B12 that does not occur naturally and must be converted by the body into active forms, is a component of many other B12 products and multivitamins. In these, the cyanide component of cobalamin (B12) is separated, which then requires it to be broken down by the body. According to studies, the bioavailability of vitamin B12 in the form of methyl- and adenosylcobalamin is higher than that of cyanocobalamin.
Plant-based sources rich in vitamin D
In recent years, European government authorities have concluded that the recommended intake of vitamin D from food (15 µg) should be set higher and that the maximum permissible dose (100 µg) could be increased. In the Netherlands, a cautious approach still prevails, and it is stated that 10 µg would be sufficient and that the upper limit should be 75 µg. Strangely enough, the NRV (or RDA) remains at 5 µg. In the orthomolecular world, however, the importance of higher doses has been recognised for some time. Leading experts on vitamin D recommend that the calcidiol level in adults should be at least 75 nmol/l. To maintain such a level of vitamin D in the blood, a daily oral dose of 25–75 µg of vitamin D3 is required. The ‘Every Day Multis’ contain high amounts of vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol). When it comes to raising vitamin D levels, this form is far more effective than vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol). Furthermore, the new ‘Every Day Multis’ contain plant-based vitamin D3 (Vitamin D3V®). The reason for this is that it is algae-based and not derived from sheep’s wool fat (like most other vitamin D3 products). This means that all multivitamins from the ‘Every Day’ range are also suitable for vegans.
Vitamins K1 and K2
The ‘Jeden Tag’ multivitamins now contain a small amount
of vitamin K1 as well as an increased amount of vitamin K2. Vitamin K1
is primarily absorbed by the liver and is mainly
responsible for activating clotting factors. In contrast,
vitamin K2 has higher bioavailability, is distributed much more
widely throughout the body’s tissues and therefore activates other
vitamin K-dependent enzymes, such as osteocalcin and MGP, more effectively. Among other things,
they ensure that calcium is absorbed correctly
and reaches where it belongs: in the bones.
For blood clotting, which is essential for survival,
the body uses vitamin K first. Vitamin K2 is a
raw material whose price is significantly higher than that of vitamin K1.
For this reason, a small amount of K1 is added to multivitamins to
ensure that it is used for the primary
function of blood clotting, whilst K2 is utilised for the other
equally important functions.
Incidentally, the NRV for vitamin K, which has been officially established, is based
on the amount required for normal blood clotting.
It is strange that the optimal dosage of
vitamin K for other bodily processes that depend on vitamin K
has not been taken into account.
Stability of vitamin K2
It appears that vitamin K2 is a very sensitive substance. The concentration of this vitamin in a tablet or capsule decreases rapidly, particularly when combined with calcium and/or magnesium. Technically speaking, it is a real challenge to incorporate vitamin K2 into a product containing high doses of calcium and/or magnesium. Vitals therefore uses a K2 supplement under the brand name K2Vital® Delta, which remains stable even in a formula containing high levels of these minerals. A patented microencapsulation process is used to protect the fat-soluble K2 particles with two layers, thereby prevent reactions with other ingredients. Vitals had the stability of K2Vital® Delta tested by an independent laboratory, and it proved to be the best product. A comparison was carried out with other brands of vitamin K2, particularly in combination with the ingredients found in Vitals products. It was concluded that protecting K2 is absolutely essential, that the K2 content remained constant with K2Vital® Delta, and that it was superior to the other K2 ingredients.
Natural calcium and magnesium from the sea
From now on, the multivitamins will use calcium and
magnesium supplements from the Aquamin® brand, which are sourced from the sea.
The tablets thus provide significantly higher doses
than the compound forms used previously, whilst the absorption
of these ingredients has been proven to be good.
The magnesium (Aquamin Magnesium) is sourced from the seawater of the
Irish Sea, and studies confirm its good bioavailability. The
raw material contains, in addition to approximately 35% elemental magnesium,
small amounts of other minerals and trace elements.
The calcium (Aquamin Calcium) is extracted from the red alga Lithothamnium
calcareum. This species of alga absorbs minerals and
trace elements from the sea and stores them. Naturally, it
has a beautiful red or pink hue; however, as it dies, it calcifies
and takes on a white or light grey colour. Only
calcified red algae originating from the waters along the Icelandic
coast are harvested. In addition to a
calcium content of 32 per cent, the raw material also contains 3 per cent magnesium as well as small amounts
of other minerals and trace elements.
Perhaps the synergistic effect of the natural
trace element profile of this calcium and magnesium explains
the improved absorption and the impressive studies that
have been carried out using it.
Zinc in the form of an amino acid chelate (bisglycinate)
For the mineral zinc, amino acid chelates (bisglycinate) are used. Each zinc particle is strongly bound (chelated) to two molecules of the amino acid glycine. Minerals in this compound form can easily reach the small intestine and are very well absorbed there. Vitals makes a careful selection of amino acid chelates from Albion Minerals, which can be recognised by the TRAACS® brand, standing for ‘The Real Amino Acid Chelate System’. This brand was launched to distinguish itself from other, potentially inferior and unstable amino acid chelates. Albion holds over 100 patents worldwide, safeguarding the process, science and structure of its amino acid chelate minerals.
Unique: relatively high choline dosage
Choline has been used for some time now, more or less as a standard ingredient in multivitamin preparations. However, it has almost always been included in small amounts (between 10 and 30 mg), as not much was known about it. But that is changing more and more! In 2012, the European Commission approved three health claims relating to choline, which apply at a dose of at least 82.5 mg. It is important for normal fat metabolism, homocysteine metabolism and liver function. In the USA, in 2016, based on clinical studies, an RDA of 550 mg per day was established, with the aim of determining the daily requirement. Choline was also recognised by the EFSA in 2016 as an essential nutrient; however, no NRV has yet been established for it. The recommendation for adequate intake is 400 mg per day. This is based on the average intake levels in European countries and not on the American study, which yielded a figure of 550 mg per day. The average intake amongst European adults ranges between 291 and 468 mg per day. There are plenty of reasons to include a generous dose of choline in a daily multivitamin supplement! ‘Every Day 50+’ relies on choline from the VitaCholine® brand. This brand represents the highest quality and has been the subject of extensive research.
Lutein, zeaxanthin and meso-zeaxanthin
Lutein, zeaxanthin and meso-zeaxanthin are natural carotenoids. In the body, these substances are found in particularly high concentrations in the retina and the macula lutea (‘yellow spot’). Lutein and zeaxanthin cannot be produced by the body itself; they must therefore be obtained through the diet. They are found, amongst other things, in green leafy vegetables as well as in red, yellow and orange-coloured fruit and vegetables. Meso-zeaxanthin is present in food only in small amounts (e.g. in prawns, salmon skin, and the skin and flesh of trout). It is primarily produced in the retina through the conversion of lutein via an enzymatic reaction. However, it can easily be taken in the form of dietary supplements. Meso-zeaxanthin has only recently been recognised as an excellent supplement and should be preferred to lutein and zeaxanthin alone.
