Ester-C 1000 mg, 90 tablets

Ester-C, the non-acidic form of vitamin C

Once vitamin C has been absorbed into the body, it is converted into specific metabolites (intermediate or end products). Threonic acid appears to be the most significant metabolite. Ester-C® is a patented vitamin C formulation consisting of calcium ascorbate that has already been partially converted, meaning that certain natural metabolites, such as threonic acid, are present. Threonic acid and the other vitamin C metabolites promote the absorption and metabolism of vitamin C in the body. Furthermore, threonic acid appears to be able to mobilise vitamin C already stored in the body.

Benefits of Ester-C

Studies have identified the following benefits of Ester-C compared to ascorbic acid:

  • enters the bloodstream twice as quickly and remains in the body for twice as long
  • reduces the excretion of oxalates in the urine to a quarter
  • The loss of ascorbate via the urine is six times lower.
  • Improved incorporation of vitamin C into white blood cells and longer retention
  • is well tolerated by the digestive system, even in high doses
  • poses no risk to tooth enamel

Ester-C® is produced in the USA by The Ester C Company using a patented manufacturing process.

Bioflavonoids

Bioflavonoids are water-soluble substances which, together with vitamin C, are found mainly in fresh fruit and vegetables. Bioflavonoids are regarded as enhancers of vitamin C. They support the bioavailability of vitamin C.

Effects of vitamin C

Vitamin C is arguably the most frequently mentioned vitamin, known for its positive influence on the body’s defences. Vitamin C supports the immune system, particularly during intense physical activity or in cold conditions. However, this vitamin also plays a role in a wide range of processes.

In the body, vitamin C acts as a water-soluble antioxidant and is crucial for defending against free radicals. It forms part of a complex network comprising the body’s own antioxidants, those derived from food, and antioxidant enzymes, which are interdependent and interact with one another. In this capacity, it helps protect DNA, proteins and fats from oxidative damage, thereby contributing to the maintenance of healthy cells and tissues. Vitamin C is also required as a coenzyme for three different enzymes involved in the synthesis of collagen (the most abundant structural component in the human body). Normal collagen formation is important for bones, cartilage, gums, skin, tendons and blood vessels, amongst other things.

Vitamin C is an essential cofactor for dopamine beta-monooxygenase (DBM), the enzyme that converts dopamine into noradrenaline and adrenaline. As both act as neurotransmitters and hormones in the body, vitamin C has a positive influence on the function of the nervous system and supports normal mental function. Vitamin C is essential for two enzymes involved in the synthesis of carnitine, which is required to transport long-chain fatty acids into the mitochondria for energy production.

In this way, vitamin C contributes to energy levels. It can also be helpful in cases of fatigue. Furthermore, there are many people who do not consume sufficient iron through their diet – particularly women of childbearing age, pregnant women and (young) children. Vitamin C enhances the absorption of iron from food. This refers to non-haem iron, which is found in both plant-based and animal-based foods. The absorption of haem iron (which is found exclusively in animal products) is not affected by vitamin C. Around 90% of the iron in food is non-haem iron. Only 10% consists of haem iron. Vitamin C acts as an electron donor and can thus convert oxidised vitamin E back into its active, reduced form, thereby preserving the vitamin’s effectiveness.

As the human body is unable to produce vitamin C on its own, it is entirely dependent on the diet for its supply.

Nutritional properties

  • Vitamin C contributes to the normal function of the immune system during and after intense physical activity (this effect only occurs with an additional intake of 200 mg of vitamin C).
  • Vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of blood vessels, bones and cartilage, as well as skin and teeth.
  • Vitamin C contributes to normal energy metabolism, normal functioning of the nervous system and normal psychological function, as well as to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.
  • Vitamin C contributes to the normal function of the immune system and increases iron absorption.
  • Vitamin C contributes to the regeneration of the reduced form of vitamin E and helps to protect cells from oxidative stress.

Notes from EnergyVital

According to current scientific knowledge, the body can absorb a maximum of 500 mg of vitamin C at any one time; any excess is excreted in the urine. We therefore recommend splitting the tablet and taking it in divided doses throughout the day, unless your therapist has specifically instructed you to take it whole.
This is also helpful for those with difficulty swallowing, as the 1 g tablets are quite large. There is no reason not to crush them in a mortar or, if one is not available, simply with a wooden meat tenderiser; they can also be added to food as a powder.

Storage instructions

Store in a cool, dry place away from light (not in the fridge).
