Liquid EPA/DHA 1200 mg with a high content of EPA and DHA
These essential omega-3 fatty acids are an indispensable component of our daily basic nutritional supplement. Softgel capsules are the form in which EPA and DHA are offered by most fish oil products. In certain situations, however, a liquid form may be advantageous, for example when high amounts of EPA and DHA are required or when a person finds it difficult to swallow capsules. Liquid EPA/DHA 1200 mg contains particularly fresh and pure fish oil, which gives the product a pleasant taste and smell. Furthermore, the taste experience is further enhanced by the addition of a natural lemon flavouring. Compared to other liquid fish oils, which often leave an unpleasant fishy aftertaste, the neutral and mild flavour of this product is truly distinctive. As a result, Liquid EPA/DHA 1200 mg is also ideal for (young) children. The omega-3 fatty acids contained in this product are easily absorbed, as they are present in their natural, unprocessed triglyceride form.
Good for the heart, brain and eyes
The omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA work together to have a positive effect on the heart. Furthermore, DHA helps maintain normal vision and healthy brain function. It is not without reason that the consumption of particularly oily fish species, which are naturally rich in EPA and DHA, has always featured in official dietary recommendations for a healthy diet. In practice, however, most people do not eat enough (oily) fish to reach the recommended daily intake of EPA and DHA. There are various reasons why these people do not reach the recommended daily intake. This can be problematic as fish remains our main source of EPA and DHA .
The same official guidelines also point out that it is better not to eat fish too often. The reason for this is the pollutants that fish may contain as a result of environmental pollution (in particular dioxins, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and heavy metals such as methylmercury). High-quality, purified fish oil supplements (such as Liquid EPA/DHA 1200 mg), which contain few or none of these contaminants, do not pose a problem in this regard. More and more people are therefore choosing to supplement their daily diet with a fish oil supplement in order to make the most of the health benefits of these polyunsaturated long-chain fatty acids.
Required EPA/DHA dosage for optimal omega-3 fatty acid status
Omega-3 fatty acid status refers to the amount of EPA and DHA present in the body. Nowadays, it is perfectly possible to determine one’s omega-3 fatty acid status. One option for this is a blood test using a finger prick, in which the omega-3 index is measured. The omega-3 index, a reliable indicator of omega-3 fatty acid status, indicates the proportion of EPA and DHA in the overall fatty acid composition of the cell membranes of red blood cells. It also shows a strong correlation with the level of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids in tissues and organs, including the heart.
There is growing evidence that an omega-3 index of at least 8 per cent is optimal. Research has shown that a significant proportion of the population – particularly people with a typically European diet (i.e. one characterised by excessive intake of omega-6 fatty acids) – must consume high amounts of EPA/DHA to achieve this. With a low omega-3 index (approx. 4.5 per cent, which is the average in Western countries ), supplementation with 2 grams of EPA/DHA usually causes the omega-3 index to rise to around 8 per cent after about three months. To maintain this index, around 700–1200 mg of EPA/DHA per day is likely to be sufficient, depending on dietary habits.
Natural triglyceride form: Fats occur naturally in food and also in fish oil as triglycerides. They are composed of three fatty acid molecules bound to a single glycerol molecule. Unprocessed fish oil contains EPA or DHA as well as two other fatty acids. For this reason, the natural proportion of DHA/EPA in fish oil is no more than approximately 30 per cent. In fish oil supplements in softgel capsules, a higher concentration (up to 80–90 per cent) is desirable, as space in a softgel capsule is limited. To achieve this, during the manufacturing process, the fatty acid chains are separated from the glycerol and the EPA/DHA fatty acids are extracted, whereby further processing allows higher concentrations and different ratios of EPA and DHA to be achieved. One advantage of liquid fish oil is that it is not so severely restricted by limited space. Ultimately, it is no problem to measure out a larger quantity of the oil using a teaspoon or measuring spoon. This allows the fish oil to contain a sufficient natural concentration of omega-3. This means that no further production steps are required to increase the concentration of EPA and DHA. A liquid fish oil supplement offers the additional advantage that the dose can be adjusted much more easily, for example when the product is used by several family members.
Permitted health claims:
DHA (docosahexaenoic acid)...
- contributes to the maintenance of normal brain function.
- contributes to the maintenance of normal visual function.
These two claims are only permitted if you consume at least 250 mg of DHA daily.
DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) contributes to the maintenance of normal triglyceride levels in the blood
This claim is only permitted with a daily intake of at least 2 g of DHA. Total intake must not exceed 5 g of DHA+EPA.
The mother’s intake of DHA contributes to the normal development of the eyes and brain in the foetus and in breastfed infants.
This claim is only permitted for a daily intake of at least 250 mg of DHA+EPA and an additional 200 mg of DHA.
DHA and EPA (omega-3 fatty acids) contribute to the maintenance of normal blood pressure
This claim is only permitted for a daily intake of at least 3 g of DHA+EPA. Total intake must not exceed 5 g of DHA+EPA.
DHA and EPA (omega-3 fatty acids) contribute to normal heart function and to the maintenance of normal triglyceride levels in the blood.
All these claims are scientifically substantiated and have been approved by the EU. The extent to which the desired effect is achieved also depends on how much DHA+EPA is consumed.
