Selenium boosts energy – the all-rounder among trace elements
Selenium: a versatile element – selenium occurs as a trace element in numerous enzymes and therefore has a wide range of functions in our body. Among other things, it is a component of antioxidant enzymes and contributes to the normal functioning of the immune system and to healthy hair and nails. However, it is also particularly well known for its role in the thyroid gland. There, as a co-factor, it contributes to the conversion of the thyroid hormone T4 into its active form, T3. Selenium is important, but cannot be produced by the body itself . It must therefore be obtained from food, making it advisable to pay particular attention to ensuring an adequate intake.
We obtain most of our selenium from plant-based foods, which in turn have absorbed it from the soil . Unfortunately, however, this is also where the problem lies. This is because selenium concentrations in the soil vary greatly not only regionally but also across different regions. Another source can be found in animal-based foods. However, this is understandably not an option for those following a vegetarian or vegan diet.
Selenium requirements and sodium selenite vs. selenium methionine
The German Society for Nutrition recommends a daily intake of10–70 µg of selenium . Age is a very important factor here: the younger the person, the less selenium needs to be consumed daily. For example, 10-year-olds have a requirement of 30 µg, whilst adults require 70 mg. Children aged under 4 years require just 15 µg; it therefore goes without saying that selenium capsules for adults must be kept well out of the reach of children !
The upper limit for selenium is
300 mg, which is the amount an adult can consume daily over the long term
without any harmful effects.
Selenium is a particularly critical nutrient. This means that a
deficiency has particularly serious consequences for the body,
as does an excess. A daily intake of
more than 300 µg should therefore be avoided, unless you have been
instructed by a doctor or alternative practitioner to deviate from this recommendation, e.g. due to a
severe deficiency.
Sodium selenite is
inorganic selenium, which is absorbed very quickly by the body
and acts effectively in the short term. However, this also means the risk
of an overdose is higher.
It is therefore suitable for situations where selenium needs to act quickly and
effectively, such as in the case of an acute zinc deficiency.
Selenium methionine is organic selenium, which is absorbed by the body more slowly. This, along with selenium yeast, is particularly suitable if you wish to rectify a significant deficiency in the long term and sustainably, but less so if you are looking for an effective and rapid effect. On the other hand, it is less likely to lead to a harmful overdose so quickly.
