An optimal blend of 800 mg of vitamin C and 60 mg of magnesium
Derived from easily absorbable magnesium ascorbate. For
people who do not tolerate ascorbic acid well, vitamin C in
the buffered form of magnesium ascorbate is suitable.
Compared to ascorbic acid, magnesium ascorbate has a
lower acid content. It therefore causes virtually no
gastrointestinal problems. If you have a higher requirement for
vitamin C, a form without added acid, such as
magnesium ascorbate, is best suited. Another advantage
of Vitals’ Vitamin C + Magnesium is the 60 mg
of magnesium per capsule, which can be beneficial if
additional magnesium supplementation is required. A
vegetable capsule contains vitamin C and magnesium from
magnesium ascorbate. Magnesium ascorbate (vitamin C)
is also available in powder form.
Effects of vitamin C
Vitamin C is probably the most frequently mentioned
vitamin, known in particular for its positive influence on the
immune system. And that is true.
Particularly during intense physical activity or in cold
environments, vitamin C has a supportive effect on the
immune system. However, this vitamin plays a role in
a wide range of processes. Vitamin C is a water-soluble
antioxidant and plays a significant role in scavenging free
radicals. It forms part of a complex system that
comprises the body’s own antioxidants, dietary antioxidants and
antioxidant enzymes, and in which there are mutual
dependencies and interactions. In this
role, it protects DNA, proteins and fats from oxidative damage
and thus helps to maintain healthy cells and tissues.
Furthermore, vitamin C acts as a coenzyme for three different
enzymes involved in the production of collagen (the
most abundant structural component in the human body)
. Normal collagen formation is important for bones, cartilage, gums, skin, tendons and
blood vessels, amongst other things.
Vitamin C is an
essential cofactor for dopamine beta-monooxygenase (DBM), the enzyme that converts dopamine
into noradrenaline and adrenaline. Both act as neurotransmitters and
hormones in the body, which is why vitamin C has a positive effect on
the functioning of the nervous system and contributes to normal
mental function. For the synthesis of
carnitine, which is required for the transport of long-chain fatty acids into the
mitochondria for energy production,
vitamin C is essential for two enzymes.
Vitamin C thus contributes to the maintenance of energy levels
. It may also be helpful in combating fatigue. Furthermore,
there are many people who do not consume
sufficient iron through their diet – particularly women of
childbearing age, pregnant women and (young) children. The
absorption of iron from food is enhanced by vitamin C.
This refers to non-haem iron, which is found in both plant-based and
animal-based foods. The absorption of
haem iron, which is found exclusively in animal products,
is not affected by vitamin C. Around 90% of the
iron found in food is
non-haem iron. Only 10% consists of
haem iron. Vitamin C acts as an
electron donor, enabling oxidised vitamin E to be restored to its active,
reduced form. This preserves the effect
of vitamin E.
Humans cannot produce vitamin C themselves and are
entirely dependent on
dietary intake for their supply of this vitamin.
The role of magnesium in the body
Magnesium is beneficial for the muscles and plays an
important role in maintaining strong teeth and bones.
Furthermore, it is involved in over 300 enzymatic processes
. In this context, magnesium plays an important role as a
cofactor for enzymes involved in
protein synthesis (the process by which proteins are produced
on the basis of DNA). It also helps to maintain a healthy balance of
electrolytes, as it acts as a cofactor for many enzymes
responsible for maintaining an electrical
(cells – particularly nerve and
muscle cells – use the electrical charge of
electrolytes to conduct electrical impulses to and from
other cells, such as nerve impulses or
muscle contractions). Magnesium plays a role in
nerve conduction and muscle contraction, making it important
for muscle function, including that of the heart muscle.
Furthermore, a lack of magnesium intake can cause fatigue . In this case, magnesium can help you get back into shape. It contributes to the release of energy from fats, carbohydrates and protein, thereby supporting energy levels. It is also important for brain and nervous system functions, which affect aspects such as concentration, memory and mood. And it also contributes to the formation of cells and tissues and to normal cell division.
