Vitamins D and K – best taken together!
Awareness of the significant impact of vitamins K2
and D3 on our health is steadily growing. As a result,
more and more people are taking vitamins K2 and D3 daily in the form of
dietary supplements. Vitals offers a
combination of vitamins K2 and D3. However, research
is increasingly revealing just how pronounced the
synergistic effect is and to what extent their metabolic functions
complement one another. A powerful combination!
Vitals’ Vitamin K2 + D3 capsules are vegan and softgel-based.
They contain a generous amount of both fat-soluble vitamins,
which are MCT oil-based. To protect the vitamins, which
are highly sensitive to light, the softgel capsule has been made
opaque using iron oxide. Softgel capsules are
very popular and extremely convenient to use, as they
are easy to swallow. Fortunately, softgel capsules
are no longer made solely from gelatine. Plant-based alternatives are now
available, such as
tapioca starch derived from cassava.
The vitamin D3 contained in this product, marketed under the brand name Vitamin D3V®,
is also of plant origin. It is produced from
algae and not from sheep’s wool fat, unlike many of the
vitamin D3 products still available. This product is also
perfectly suitable for vegans. The vitamin K2 is supplied by
the Norwegian K2 specialist Balchem as K2VITAL™.
As on previous occasions, we have once again
chosen only high-quality branded ingredients. You’ll
already be familiar with this from Vitals!
Vitamins K and D work together to transport calcium to
where it is needed. In the body, vitamin D ensures
the production of a specific protein that relies on the action of
vitamin K. This so-called Gla protein is
activated by vitamin K in order to function properly.
Osteocalcin(1) and matrix Gla protein (MGP)(2) are significant
examples of this. Binding calcium is a common function
of these Gla proteins, which depend on vitamin K. Vitamins
K and vitamin D are responsible for ensuring that the calcium from
our diet is transported to the right places in the body
.
The most effective forms are vitamin K2 and D3.
The main function of vitamin K1 is to activate the
protein necessary for blood clotting. This occurs primarily
through its uptake in the liver. Outside the liver, too,
vitamin K2 is required to activate other forms of protein that
depend on vitamin K (such as osteocalcin and MGP). There
are various forms of vitamin K2 (also known as ‘menaquinone’
), including the best-known MK-4, MK-7, MK-8 and
MK-9. According to the current state of
scientific knowledge, menaquinone-7 (MK-7) is considered the most effective form of vitamin K2. MK-7
is absorbed exceptionally well and remains in the
body for a long time, allowing it to take effect.
The most common forms of vitamin D (calciferol) are vitamin D2
(ergocalciferol) and vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol).
Cholecalciferol is produced in human skin by ultraviolet
light, such as sunlight (hence the
name ‘sun vitamin’). In the liver, these
forms of vitamin D are converted into calcidiol (25-hydroxyvitamin D)
. In the kidneys, as well as in other cells and
tissues, calcidiol is converted, as required, into the biologically active
hormone calcitriol (1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D). However,
when it comes to dietary supplements, it is important to note
that vitamin D3 appears to be more effective than vitamin D2 in most cases
at increasing levels of calcidiol and, ultimately,
calcitriol in the blood.
K2VITAL™ from the Norwegian company Balchem, a specialist
in vitamin K2, is considered to be very unstable in
dietary supplements. The vitamin K2 content of a
product can decrease rapidly when combined with minerals or certain
excipients. This is, of course,
highly undesirable, as one would ideally
like to be able to store a dietary supplement
for its entire shelf life. The Norwegian manufacturer Balchem has developed base materials
for vitamin K2 that have proven to be very pure and stable.
Scientists studying the effects
of vitamin K in the human body choose Balchem’s vitamin K2
as their first option for good
reason. Following
extensive stability tests on various K2 base materials
in different compositions, Vitals has selected Balchem as
its supplier of vitamin K2. The results were
simply convincing.
