Maca

Maca is a root that grows naturally in the high altitudes of the Peruvian Andes. Peruvians have traditionally used maca for its beneficial effects on physical and mental health. Maca is classified as an ‘adaptogen’. Adaptogens are herbs that help the body cope with various physical and psychological challenges, thereby helping to maintain balance. What many people do not realise is that there are several types of maca, each with a different phytochemical composition and varying levels of efficacy. The different types of maca are distinguished by the colour of the root, which can be yellow, red or black, amongst others. Black maca is regarded as the typical ‘men’s maca’ due to the specific proportions of its characteristic constituents (such as glucosinolates and lignans). Yellow maca (containing different glucosinolates), on the other hand, is generally regarded as ‘women’s maca’. MacaHarmony® is a maca concentrate comprising an effective combination of maca varieties and has been specially developed to support physical and mental balance in women. Black cohosh

Black cohosh is the most commonly used herb for managing the symptoms of the menopause. It is very important that the quality is high and that standards are consistent.  The mechanisms of action of black cohosh are not yet fully understood, but it does not contain phytoestrogens, as was previously assumed. The black cohosh extract in the Women’s Formula Pro 45+ is standardised to a content of 2.5% triterpene glycosides, the active constituents of the plant’s rhizome.

Ashwagandha

Like maca, ashwagandha is a herb with potent adaptogenic properties. For details on how it works, please refer to the note above regarding your own research. Women’s Formula Pro contains a high dose of the well-known Ashwagandha extract KSM-66® from the manufacturer Ixoreal. The development of this specialised extract was based on fourteen years of research. A specially developed extraction process (without toxic or environmentally harmful solvents) is used for KSM-66®. This yields a broad-spectrum extract in which the natural properties of the original plant are preserved. Incidentally, Ixoreal has made a conscious decision to use only unsprayed ashwagandha plants. In other words: KSM-66® not only offers the highest quality, but is also the most thoroughly researched Ashwagandha extract in the world (Bakhtiar Choudhary, Shetty A, and Deepak G Langade 2015).

Maritime pine bark extract

Pycnogenol® is a patented and standardised extract from the bark (the outer part of the bark) of the maritime pine (Pinus pinaster), a species of pine that grows on the south-western coast of France. Traditionally, pines are also referred to as pine trees. The extract is rich in various types of polyphenols, including oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs) and organic acids (such as ferulic acid, cinnamic acid and caffeic acid). Pycnogenol® has a long history of use. It has been used as a dietary supplement for around 40 years. Today, it is one of the most extensively researched nutrients in the world, with more than 300 scientific publications. Pycnogenol® has a powerful antioxidant effect.

Ingredients

Maca (Lepidium peruvianum Chacon, root), bulking agent (microcrystalline cellulose [cellulose gel]), ashwagandha extract (Withania somnifera, root, contains milk), anti-caking agents (silicon dioxide, magnesium salts of fatty acids, hydroxypropyl cellulose), Black cohosh extract (Cimicifuga racemosa, rhizome), French maritime pine bark extract (Pinus pinaster, bark), coating agent (hydroxypropyl methylcellulose), humectant (glycerol).

Recommended intake

Take 1 tablet twice a day with water, with a meal. If the results are not satisfactory, the dose may be temporarily increased to 2 tablets twice a day.

Note

If you have hyperthyroidism or are taking thyroid medication, you should consult a doctor before using an ashwagandha supplement. Do not use during pregnancy or whilst breastfeeding.
