Effects on cholesterol and blood glucose
The most important property of oat beta-glucan is its ability to control cholesterol levels. In the intestine this fibre forms a gel-like substance that binds bile acids. Because bile acids are made from cholesterol, the body must produce cholesterol from the blood, which reduces 'bad' LDL cholesterol. In addition, the viscous gel causes the stomach to empty more slowly. This means the blood glucose level rises more slowly after eating and insulin production is reduced – which is ideal for preventing diabetes.
Strengthening the immune system and gut health
Beta-glucans, especially those from yeast and fungi, are considered powerful "immune boosters". They activate certain immune cells such as macrophages and natural killer cells, thereby strengthening the body's defence against disease. In the gut they serve as food for beneficial bacteria and support the production of short-chain fatty acids, which inhibit inflammation and improve gut health.
Sources and recommended intake
The best sources are rolled oats, oat bran and barley. For example, this can be achieved with about 40–50 grams of oat bran. It is an important part of a diet aimed at a healthy cholesterol level and that strengthens the immune system.
