Lecithin, particularly for the nerves

Lecithin is an essential substance for humans and is one of the phospholipids. It is a major component of every cell membrane and crucial for the shape and flexibility of cells, especially in the brain, in nerves and muscles. As a natural emulsifier, lecithin binds water and fat, which is important for lipid metabolism and digestion. Lecithin is actually a mixture of different phospholipids, each of which has slightly different modes of action and efficiencies. Our sunflower lecithin is a full-spectrum blend of all components. But highly effective isolates from it are also available from us, such as phosphatidylserine... Read more

Functions and positive effects on health

A well-known effect of lecithin is the support of liver function. It aids the breakdown of fats and prevents fat accumulation in the liver. Because it contains a lot of choline, which is a building block for the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, lecithin is often used to promote brain function, memory and for nerve disorders. It is also thought that lecithin can favourably influence cholesterol levels by lowering "bad" LDL cholesterol and raising "good" HDL cholesterol.

Occurrence and production

Lecithin is found in both animal and plant foods. Good natural sources are soybeans, sunflower seeds, egg yolks, linseed and liver. Because lecithin is commonly used as an emulsifier (E322), it is also found in many processed foods such as chocolate or baked goods. It is often derived from soya or sunflower oil and sold as a food supplement in the form of granules or capsules.

Uses of lecithin

It is used not only as a food supplement to boost energy, but also in beauty products for the skin. While breastfeeding it can also help prevent blocked milk ducts. As it is often made from soya, it is important for allergy sufferers that it is labelled as soya lecithin. Overall, lecithin is regarded as a harmless, natural nutrient that helps the body process fats and supports the nerves.
