Pepper, the power of black gold
Black pepper (Piper nigrum) has been regarded for centuries as the "king of spices" and enriches the kitchen with its aromatic heat. But behind the robust flavour lies a remarkable potential for wellbeing. The core of this health potential lies in the fruits of the pepper plant, which, in addition to essential oils, resins and starch, contain a particularly valuable compound: piperine. This substance is not only responsible for the heat, but also acts as a key to optimised nutrient absorption in the body... Read more

Piperine: The active ingredient in focus
The alkaloid piperine is the main active ingredient in pepper. It is a pungent-tasting substance concentrated in the outer layers of the peppercorn. Piperine is known to stimulate metabolic processes and support digestion. A particular health benefit lies in its ability to increase the bioavailability of other nutrients. This means that piperine helps the body absorb and utilise other health-promoting substances – such as curcumin from turmeric – far more efficiently. It thus acts as a natural enhancer.
Valuable constituents and effects
In addition to piperine, pepper contains a variety of beneficial constituents. These include essential oils such as sabinene, limonene and pinene, which are responsible for the aroma. Pepper is also a source of manganese, iron and vitamin K. These constituents give pepper antioxidant properties, thereby protecting the body from oxidative stress. The pungency also stimulates the production of digestive enzymes in the pancreas, positively affecting nutrient utilisation. Warming effects on the body are also known, which are particularly appreciated in the colder months.
Pepper in the diet
To make full use of its health benefits, it is advisable to use freshly ground pepper, as the essential oils evaporate quickly after grinding. Another tip is to combine it with healthy fats. Because piperine is fat-soluble, its absorption is improved when taken with oils. Whether in soups, sauces or curries – pepper is a versatile companion for a nutrient-rich diet and promotes general well-being through its stimulating effect on metabolism.
