Algae – the green superfood
Algae are not only enjoyed as seaweed in both Asian and Northern European cuisine. They also contain the full range of nutrients found in the seas. Chief among them are minerals such as essential iodine, which is lacking in most foods that grow far from the sea, since it has naturally been leached from the soils here since the last Ice Age. The best-known microalgae are chlorella and the two blue-green algae spirulina and AFA. The latter two are in fact cyanobacteria, though they are usually still grouped with the microalgae. All three are often referred to as superfoods. Like plants, which have a high content of the green pigment chlorophyll, they can, with the help of sunlight, convert carbon dioxide and water into nutrients (photosynthesis), releasing oxygen in the process. Algae are responsible for no less than 90% of the world's oxygen production in this way... Read more

Micro- and macroalgae
Approximately 30,000 different species of algae exist. There are two types of algae: macroalgae and microalgae. Macroalgae are also referred to as seaweeds. They can, for example, be eaten in a salad, served as a side to vegetables, or used as flakes or powder for seasoning. Nori, a well-known type of seaweed, is used for sushi. Rice, vegetables and fish are wrapped in nori sheets.
Microalgae are mostly consumed (in capsule form) as dietary supplements, but can also enrich the diet in powder form by being mixed into smoothies, shakes, dressings or doughs.
The similarities between Chlorella, Arthrospira and AFA
- They provide the body with a variety of bioactive nutrients in concentrated form, which are readily available.
- Particularly notable is the high content of folic acid, readily absorbable iron and, in some cases, vitamin B12.
- They are considered alkaline, which helps in regulating the acid–base balance.
- Their high chlorophyll content increases the oxygen level in the blood. They also exert numerous other interesting effects, which are explained in our chlorophyll article in the previous link.
- Phycocyanin, the blue pigment of the algae, is credited with a particular immune-stimulating effect (stimulation of lymphocyte activity).
- Unlike seaweeds, Chlorella, Spirulina and AFA contain only very small amounts of iodine or none at all.
