5-HTP from Griffonia
5-HTP is classed among non-endogenous amino acids and therefore must be taken into the body via the diet. Its biological significance lies primarily in its influence on serotonin synthesis, where it acts as a direct precursor. The formation of melatonin (also known as the 'sleep hormone') is also influenced by 5‑HTP. 5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan) is formed during the production of the neurotransmitter serotonin from L-tryptophan. As a dietary supplement, it can effectively raise serotonin levels in the brain because it crosses the blood–brain barrier more easily than other substances. It is usually obtained from the seeds of the African plant Griffonia simplicifolia... Read more

Mechanism of action and uses:
As 5‑HTP raises serotonin levels – often referred to as the "feel‑good hormone" – it is used to support mild depression, anxiety and to improve sleep (because it is converted into melatonin). It can also help regulate the feeling of satiety and thus support weight loss.
Side effects and safety:
5‑HTP is generally well tolerated but can particularly at the beginning cause gastrointestinal problems such as nausea or diarrhoea. A dose that is too high can be dangerous.
Important
It should not be taken together with antidepressants (SSRIs/MAO inhibitors) without consulting a doctor, as this can trigger a dangerous serotonin syndrome. Long‑term use without medical supervision is not recommended.
