What is folic acid?
Folic acid (vitamin B9) is a water-soluble B vitamin that is essential for cell division, blood formation and growth processes. In its synthetic form it is known as "folic acid" (e. g. in dietary supplements) and in its natural form as "folate" (found in foods such as leafy green vegetables, legumes and liver). A deficiency can cause anaemia, fatigue and growth delays. It is particularly dangerous in pregnancy because it helps prevent neural tube defects such as spina bifida.
Key properties of folic acid
- Cell division and growth: Folic acid plays an important role in the formation of new healthy cells, including red blood cells
- Blood formation: It is crucial for the development and production of new red blood cells.
- Metabolism: The vitamin plays a role in the breakdown of homocysteine, a metabolic product whose high levels can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.
- Prevention of neural tube defects: Adequate folic acid intake during pregnancy is essential to prevent severe neural tube malformations such as spina bifida.
Sources:
- Natural in foods (folate): Mainly in dark leafy vegetables such as spinach and lettuce, legumes, wholegrain products, liver and oranges
- Synthetic form (folic acid): Is contained in dietary supplements and fortified foods.
Special features:
- Folic acid is water-soluble and cannot be produced or stored by the body, so it must be taken in daily through the diet.
- Sensitivity: The vitamin is sensitive to heat, light and oxygen. Therefore folic acid can be lost through improper preparation and storage.
Pregnancy and deficiency
- Deficiency: A lack can lead to anaemia, fatigue, concentration difficulties and an increased susceptibility to infections.
- Pregnancy: Women of childbearing age are advised to take supplementation to prevent neural tube defects in the foetus. The requirement increases significantly during this period and should begin before a planned pregnancy.
