Berries – not just vitamins and minerals
In addition to the well-known, very healthy nutrients, berries also contain plenty of secondary plant compounds. These also serve to defend against pests and bacteria, since berries are very delicate and therefore need to protect themselves well. We can transfer some of these effects to ourselves when we eat berries or extracts of them. Wild berries contain a wealth of secondary plant compounds, especially anthocyanins (which are responsible for the dark colour, have strong antioxidant activity and inhibit inflammation) and tannins (astringent, helpful for diarrhoea), as well as polyphenols that protect cells, and vitamins, minerals and dietary fibre that can strengthen the immune system, promote digestion and reduce the risk of chronic diseases. Dark berries, particularly bilberries, contain especially high levels of anthocyanins... Read more

Important secondary plant compounds in wild berries:
- Anthocyanins: They belong to the flavonoid group and give dark berries (e.g. bilberries and blackberries) their colour. They exhibit strong antioxidant (free radical‑scavenging) and anti‑inflammatory activity.
- Tannins: Have an astringent and haemostatic effect. Dried bilberries are traditionally used for diarrhoea.
- Polyphenols: An overarching category for numerous antioxidant substances, including anthocyanins.
Additional health‑promoting components
- Vitamins: High levels of vitamin C, and also vitamins E, K and the B vitamins.
- Minerals: Iron, magnesium and potassium.
- Dietary fibre: Pectins support digestion and contribute to satiety.
Examples sorted by berry type:
- Bilberries: Excellent source of polyphenols, tannins and anthocyanins (the darker, the more); may reduce blood pressure.
- Blackberries: High in anthocyanins, magnesium, iron and vitamin C.
- Raspberries: Rich in iron, B vitamins and magnesium.
Health benefits:
- Antioxidants protect the cells.
- Support for the immune system.
- Support for digestion.
- Anti‑inflammatory effects.
- Possibly protective against chronic diseases.
